Facilities

Our campus features beautiful brick buildings framing ample lawn space, as well as easy pedestrian access to all facilities. During the summer, a wide variety of meeting rooms and lounge areas are available for use, including our state-of-the-art Weyerhaeuser academic building, the 1,100-seat Cowles Auditorium and classrooms that hold groups from 10 to 240. Whatever your type or size of gathering, Whitworth has first-rate venues to accommodate your needs.

Buildings, Rooms & Meeting Spaces

Hixson Union Building: The Hixson Union Building is home to the campus bookstore, the post office, the Mind & Hearth Coffee House, a 360-seat dining hall, a large multipurpose room, meeting rooms and lounge areas. The HUB is the center of campus activity.

Dining Hall: Our largest meeting space on campus is ideal for events such as receptions and banquets for 250+ guests. The focal point of the room is a stunning 20-foot stained glass window.
Multipurpose Room: While offering a beautiful view of the Whitworth campus, the multipurpose room can hold 180 for meals and 245 for events. The room is available for a variety of accommodations, thus earning its name.
ABC Conference Room: This room is ideal for medium-sized meetings. The room can be arranged in a variety of fashions and is capable of accommodating up to 120 people. Buffet tables set up in the hallway allow groups to eat and meet with plenty of room. Partitions can be closed between the three rooms to make the most out of a meeting experience. Conference Room B (the middle room) features a white board and overhead projector.
Mind & Hearth: The Mind & Hearth Coffee House offers hot and cold espresso drinks and a variety of other drinks and snacks. By arrangement with the Whitworth Conferences and Special Events Office, Mind & Hearth is available during special hours for catered events. Typical summer hours are Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Crow’s Nest: Our most recent addition to the HUB allows for 90-100 seated guests above the dining hall, with the buffet positioned directly outside the room. This space has full A/V capability. Direct guest access from the parking lot may be arranged with advance notice.

Weyerhaeuser Hall: Weyerhaeuser Hall houses seven classrooms, two computer labs, a conference room and a large 250-seat teaching theatre.

Robinson Teaching Theatre: The Robinson Teaching Theatre is largest classroom on campus with a 250 person capacity. It features full AV equipment with a large projector screen, lighting capabilities and optional surround sound. During the school year, the Robinson Teaching Theatre is home to the Core program as well as many introductory courses that have a high student count.
Room 111: This classroom can seat 80 people and includes two projectors that can connect to the Robinson Teaching Theatre through a camera. In the case that the theatre is full, you can bring in people to this room and view a live feed of the theatre.

Eric Johnston Science Center: The Eric Johnston Science Center is home to all three science departments: biology, chemistry and physics. The building contains a teaching auditorium with full AV abilities and seats 87.

Cowles Auditorium

Mainstage: Named in honor of Spokane publisher William H. Cowles Sr., the auditorium, constructed in 1955 and refurbished in 1995, seats 1,100 people. Theatre, dance and music performances, as well as lectures, take place in the auditorium throughout the year.
Stage II: Stage II is a traditional theatre "black box" that seats approximately 100. Seating is on raised platforms in a horseshoe shape around a black, tiled floor. Whiteboards, VCR, overhead projector and sound equipment are available. There are both men's and women's bathrooms nearby.

Dixon Hall: Dixon Hall, completely remodeled and updated in 2000, currently serves as one of the university's main classroom buildings and is also home to the school of education and the psychology department during the school year. Multiple classrooms that can hold up to 50 people are available.

Athletics

Aquatic Center: The Newly Remodeled Megan E. Thompson Aquatic Center hosts the Pirate swim teams. The pool is a six-lane, 40-yard course with a movable bulkhead designed to allow for a deep-water racing course. In the 2019 renovation, the center received new floor-to-ceiling windows that allow natural light, a resurfaced pool deck and a new HVAC system for increased ventilation.
Athletic Fields: Whitworth's softball/soccer complex offers one of the highest-quality athletics fields in the Northwest Conference. The complex includes a complete softball field with in-ground dugouts, batting cages and bleachers. The soccer field is international-regulation size with an adjacent practice annex. Also, in 2009, Whitworth opened Omache Intramural Field that offers space for soccer, frisbee and just about any other sport played in the grass.
Fieldhouse: The home of Whitworth basketball and volleyball, the fieldhouse is a spacious multi-purpose facility with a seating capacity of 1,500. The fieldhouse houses two courts, a basketball court and a volleyball court, which can be converted into a second basketball court.
Graves Gym: This gym features a full size basketball court on the ground floor, complete with bleachers. Located in the basement are the athletic weight rooms, locker rooms and a classroom for meetings.
Merkel Baseball Field: Located behind the Whitworth Fieldhouse, Merkel Field is home to the Whitworth baseball team. A beautiful setting for a sunny spring day of baseball, the facility has undergone several recent upgrades. Bleachers have been added and reconstructed to include seats directly behind home plate.
Pine Bowl: First used in the late 1930s, the Whitworth Pine Bowl has been home to Pirate football, soccer and track teams for more than 60 years. The Pine Bowl has a seating capacity of 2,200, and its first-class tartan surface has been host to numerous university, high school and youth track meets.
Scotford Tennis Center: The Scotford Tennis Center, which includes the Ross Cutter tennis courts, was completed in 2005. The center includes three outdoor courts and three courts that occupy an all-weather tennis bubble.

Cowles Music Center: The Cowles Music Center is a beautifully designed piece of post-modern architecture that was remodeled in 2016. The building includes over 20 individual music practice rooms and classrooms that hold up to 30 people.

Myhre Recital Hall: The music recital hall holds up to 110 people and boasts a beautiful, concert-quality grand piano. The room has a simple sound system, including one microphone that can be requested for use.

Beeksma Family Theology Center: The newly remodeled Beeksma Family Theology Center hosts our campus clergy and the Seeley G. Mudd Chapel. The chapel itself has long been the center for campus worship and praise. The front of the room features a beautiful stained glass cross, and the sanctuary can comfortably seat 250-300 people. The chapel also features a state-of-the-art LCD projector and sound system, available for use upon request.

Lied Center for the Visual Arts: The Lied Center for the Visual Arts includes large, well-lit teaching studios for ceramics and sculpture, drawing, mixed media, painting and printmaking. The building features a computer graphics laboratory, two galleries, and interior view corridors, as well as exterior views to the center of campus and toward the mountains to the north.

Westminster Hall: Westminster Hall is home to the English, world languages & cultures, theology, kinesiology and athletic department offices. It includes six classrooms, with capacities ranging from 9-40 people, as well as one conference room with a capacity of 18.

Robinson Science Hall: Robinson Science Hall is a 63,000-square-foot biology and chemistry building with state-of-the-art laboratories, instrumentation and research facilities.
