Information for Faculty & Staff
Welcome to the U-Rec
All faculty and staff have an automatic membership to the U-Rec. Graduate assistants have a membership if Whitworth provides housing as part of the assistantship. Adjuncts will have a membership while their contract is active, although this group is not eligible for dependent benefits. If you have a question about your individual status, feel free to call the member services desk at 509.777.3734.
Family and Dependents of Faculty and Staff
A full-time faculty or staff member can obtain a membership for an immediate family member or dependent ages 14 to 25 by completing an online family pass application. A dependent is defined as a member of the household who is claimed as a dependent on a tax return.
The form is located on Pirate Port in the "forms" link which is located within the systems tab. After providing your username and password to access the forms web page scroll down to Recreation Center and select the "U-Rec Family Membership Application" link. After this paperwork is completed, please provide HR approximately 5 days to process. Once you receive word that the application is processed, a guest pass card can be obtained from Student Life (upstairs in the HUB). Access to U-Rec cannot be obtained on the same day as card pickup. It takes 24 hours for the data associated with the new guest card to be pushed into U-Rec's facility access software. Guests must present this card in order to gain entry to the U-Rec, and anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Daily or weekly guest passes can also be purchased by anyone 18-plus years old. The guest must be accompanied by a faculty/staff member possessing a valid Whitworth I.D. card.
Outdoor Recreation
As members of the Whitworth community, faculty and staff have access to the Outdoor Rec rental equipment and are encouraged to take part in this program. Information on prices and equipment offered can be found at www.whitworth.edu/outdoor-rec. Additionally, this group has access to trips offered through Outdoor Rec by contacting the assistant director to make arrangements.
Climbing Wall
The climbing wall is a benefit included in every membership. Before using the climbing wall, everyone must go through a short safety orientation, which can be performed by any climbing wall staff member during open hours. Open bouldering is available to those who have done a safety orientation whenever the facility is open, but top roped and lead climbing are only allowed when the climbing wall is staffed. For climbing wall open hours and offerings, please check facility hours.
Anyone who has belay experience is welcome to belay in the facility after passing a belay test with a staff member, and staff members are available to belay anyone who wishes to climb during top roping hours. Belay and lead climbing classes are offered periodically and for a small fee. Climbing shoes are available to rent through the member services desk for $1. While not required, climbing shoes are recommended for the best experience. Harnesses, ropes, belay devices and carabineers are available to use in the facility for free during open hours.
