Accommodation Services: 509.777.3380, www.whitworth.edu/ess
Educational Support Services (ESS) works with students with disabilities who seek academic, housing or other accommodation for disability-related needs. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a disability is a type of physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. The CDC defines, "A disability is any condition of the body or mind (impairment) that makes it more difficult for the person with the condition to do certain activities (activity limitation) and interact with the world around them (participation restrictions)." Examples of disabilities include but are not limited to attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, deaf/hard of hearing, mobility impairment, neurological disorders (e.g., epilepsy, migraines, fibromyalgia, Tourette syndrome), psychological disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD), speech/language disorders, specific learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, dysgraphia, auditory processing disorder), vision loss/blindness.
Our policies and practices are designed to ensure that students have an opportunity to engage in an individualized and interactive process. In order to request accommodations at Whitworth and to determine the level of need and response, students must identify themselves with the Whitworth Office of Educational Support Services. Students must submit an application form and documentation of disability assessment and complete an interview with ESS staff. Each student is responsible to inform this office in advance of services required. Accommodation is not retroactive. Please visit the educational support services webpage to get started.

Counseling services is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Appointments can be made by calling the clinic or coming in person. Students must schedule their own appointments. All counseling services are included in the Health & Wellness Fee.
We provide mental health treatment for students, including short-term individual counseling, group counseling and crisis intervention. We also provide outreach to students and mental health consultation to students, faculty and staff. Counseling services hosts "Let's Talk" to provide brief, informal, one-on-one consultation with a counselor, available Monday through Friday at different times of day, on Zoom. Check out our website for updated times: www.whitworth.edu/cms/administration/health-and-counseling-services/counseling-center/lets-talk/
The role of counseling services is to provide short-term, time-limited counseling, in order to offer services to as many students as possible. In keeping with the mission of the division of student life, counseling services strives to provide brief treatment in order to facilitate adjustment, improve functioning, achieve resolution of problems and relieve acute symptoms as soon as possible. In order to use its resources most effectively, counseling services utilizes a short-term model of therapy to assist students in addressing issues common in a university setting. Each student is able to attend up to 10 individual counseling sessions and unlimited Let's Talk and group counseling sessions, as appropriate, per academic year.
Our services are available to eligible students whose concerns fall within our scope of practice. Those whose needs cannot be accommodated within our short-term treatment model will be referred to community resources for care. Such referrals might occur immediately following an intake, or they might occur after some treatment and a further assessment of need has taken place. The counseling staff will assist the student in locating private referral sources in the community that match the student's need.
Counseling services invites all students to make an initial appointment to meet with one of our therapists and discuss their concerns. We encourage all students to utilize our services and view us as part of your support system. We hope we can be of assistance to you so that you may accomplish all you set out to do here at Whitworth.
Dining Services: 509.777.4754, www.whitworthdining.com
The Whitworth Dining Hall, located in the HUB, is one of the busiest centers on campus. The food program concentrates on practical applications of good eating habits, with an ongoing educational program and innovative themes. All students who live on campus are required to purchase a meal plan, and many meal-plan options are available for both on- and off-campus students. At the beginning of each academic year, Sodexo, our food-service provider, allows a grace period of two weeks during which students may switch meal plans as they desire. Sodexo also provides sick trays for students confined by illness, and the company's managers will personally work with students who have special dietary needs. Sack lunches are available for times when class/work schedules conflict with mealtimes, and students have the option of using flex points to purchase takeout meals from The Cafe, Mind & Hearth or Robinson Science Hall. (All other dining-hall food and beverages must be consumed in the dining hall.)
Only the student who pays for a meal card may use it. Students will not be admitted to the dining hall without their meal cards. If a student loses their card, they can request a special pass from a Sodexo manager. The pass will be issued for three meals only, to allow the student time to purchase a replacement card. Managers are available at the telephone number above to assist students with any Sodexo-related concerns, comments, questions or needs.

- Mind & Hearth Coffee House: Located in the HUB, Mind & Hearth features comfortable seating, wireless internet, a corner fireplace, music and wide-screen TV. Come by for a quiet cup or for an evening of intimate entertainment.

The Whitworth Center for Career & Professional Development, located on the first floor of the HUB, can teach you how to find part-time and summer employment. You will want to start your job search soon after you arrive at Whitworth, as most positions fill rapidly in September.
These positions are constantly updated on Handshake, our career management platform, so we encourage you to check the postings regularly. Please follow whitworth.joinhandshake.com/login to log in to your personal account.
Student employees must complete a work authorization and/or contract for each position in which they work. Students who have never worked on campus before must also complete the I-9 form for employment eligibility verification, a W-4 form for tax withholding, and a Direct Deposit form for automatically depositing paychecks. The federally mandated I-9 form requires that students show two forms of identification, usually either a U.S. passport OR a driver's license and a Social Security card. We must see the original, physical documents. The I-9, W-4, and Direct Deposit forms are available in the Center for Career & Professional Development.
Once you begin working on campus, you will submit your hours worked via Self-Service on a web time entry card. Pay periods are from the 1st through the 15th of each month and the 16th through the last day of each month. Students are paid on the 12th and the 27th of the month (unless that date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or bank holiday, in which case the pay date will be the previous Friday).
All work-study eligible students working off campus must have a current work authorization established with the employer and must complete a state or federal work-study timesheet for each pay period. Work authorizations are available in the Center for Career & Professional Development.
Students may work a maximum of 19 hours per week in an off-campus work-study position or 20 hours per week in an on-campus position. During academic breaks, most students are eligible for working up to 40 hours per week. Please see the Center for Career & Professional Development with questions about this possibility.

Internships: 509.777.3344, www.whitworth.edu/career-center
Internships are a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Completing an internship is a great way to explore an industry or career path of interest, gain relevant work experience while developing and honing in-demand skills, and network with professionals in the field.
Opportunities for internships exist in a wide variety of organizations and industries across the globe. Internships can be paid or unpaid and completed on-site at the host organization or completed remotely. Additionally, internships can be an independent endeavor of the student or, with the approval of the student's academic department/faculty internship advisor, an internship or field study may be completed for academic credit through the Whitworth Internship Program.
It is the responsibility of the student to find and secure an internship. Students should plan ahead and start their internship early as there are steps that must be completed in order to register an internship for academic credit by the registration deadline. To learn more about eligibility, important dates, and how to pursue academic credit for an internship or field study, visit Handshake's Resource Library and find the "apply for and earn academic credit for your internship experience" resource. Also see the Academic Catalog for academic information about internships and field studies.
Career services staff members can guide students through their internship search and assist with developing a plan and identifying areas of interest, searching strategies and conducting research, finding internship leads and contacts, and improving your résumé, cover letter and interview preparation. Appointments should be requested through Handshake or by emailing three dates/times and details about the help requested to careerservices@whitworth.edu.
