Institutional Review Board Application & Instructions

Institutional Review Board Proposal

Prior to undertaking your research project, you must have your project proposal reviewed and approved by Whitworth's Institutional Review Board (IRB). This is in everybody's best interest – it helps ensure that you, your participants and the university are conducting safe, worthwhile research.

You or your research group should prepare a draft of the proposal to submit to the IRB committee. The committee encourages you to have your proposal draft reviewed in advance by your supervising faculty member; this will facilitate preparation of an accurate, appropriate and sufficiently detailed application. In light of this, the IRB application form found online has been recreated in this document specifically to help you prepare your application.

The information at the link will provide instructions that make the submission process understandable and will mitigate technical difficulties. Please read through all of these instructions. Once you have finished reading the instructions, click on button at the bottom of the page to access the IRB Application.

For an overview of the OneAegis platform, see our Guide to IRB Applications on OneAegis.

OneAegis does not use your Whitworth login; you will need to register for an account on the site.

Procedure for IRB Applications

  1. Submitter completes and submits application.
  2. If the principal investigator is different from the submitter, the principal investigator also approves the application.
  3. If other required approval is indicated (e.g., a co-principal investigator), they also approve the application.
  4. For student projects, faculty assurance also approves the application.
  5. The IRB administrator performs initial review and assigns the review level.
    1. If elements are missing (e.g., attachments), the IRB administrator requests them.
    2. If the project is “Not Human Subjects Research” or “Exempt Research,” the IRB administrator informs the principal investigator; research may begin.
    3. If the project requires “Expedited Review” or “Full Board Review,” the IRB administrator sends the application to the IRB to review.
  6. IRB review: The IRB may require changes to the research plan; the IRB administrator summarizes requirements and notifies the principal investigator.
  7. Changes are made to application; any required approvals are made.
  8. IRB administrator and/or IRB approve the changes.
  9. IRB administrator notifies the principal investigator of final approval; research may begin.
