Whitworth Neighborhoods Application Guidelines
Whitworth's neighborhood program is designed to give students a unique on-campus living environment that focuses on communities of interdependent houses. The neighborhood model offers a half step between the residence hall experience and living in a totally independent off-campus house.
Each house is considered to be a part of Whitworth's housing system and therefore falls under the same community values and behavioral expectations as the residence halls. (See the student handbook for details of policies.) Because residents in these homes are Whitworth ambassadors to the Spokane community, the first violation of any Big Three policy may result in the cancellation of the house contract and relocation to a residence hall.
Whitworth Neighborhoods Program Goals
- Provide an interdependent neighborhood experience, promoting a balance between independence and community investment.
- Provide residents an opportunity to practice civic engagement through the lens of knowing your neighbor.
- Provide residents with the opportunity to serve the larger Whitworth community through hosting activities for campus.
Application Process
The Whitworth Neighborhoods application process is available from early March until April 1. All applicants must submit an individual application to be placed in a house. There is space on the application to name desired housemates as well as an opportunity to request being placed with roommates determined by Whitworth. House Descriptions
All houses are furnished with bedroom furniture, a desk and chair for each resident, a sofa, loveseat, coffee and end tables, and a dining room table and chairs. Whitworth will pay for all utilities with the exception of cable TV. Individuals in houses are not guaranteed a single room.
Houses provide extra independence because of their unique living situation. As a result, you (the student) are required to provide the majority of cleaning supplies during the year. Facility services will, however, supply houses with one issue at the beginning of the year of consumer-grade cleaning supplies for their convenience. Additionally, any brooms or vacuums that are currently in the house will not be removed over the summer months. However, the university does not typically supply these for houses. If they break, the university will not replace them.
