Community Values & Behavioral Expectations

All housing, including Whitworth Neighborhood houses and all residences halls, are considered to be part of Whitworth's housing system and therefore fall under the university's community values and behavioral expectations. The main points of the university’s community values and behavioral expectations are as follows:

  • There is to be no on-campus possession, consumption or distribution of alcohol (apart from what’s listed above), illegal drugs/mood-altering substances or controlled medication without a prescription. In compliance with federal law, medical marijuana is not allowed on Whitworth property.

  • There is to be no cohabitation on campus. We understand the term "cohabitation" to include genital sexual contact outside of marriage, and/or the spending of a night together by two people engaged in a romantic or sexual relationship or encounter.

  • There is to be no violent or destructive behavior or other conduct that threatens or endangers the safety or emotional well-being of any person on campus.

Expanding on the first point, residents who are not undergraduate students are permitted to consume and possess alcohol in the Whitworth Neighborhoods houses (but never in the residence halls). Consumption of alcohol in the presence of any undergraduate student or distribution to undergraduate students is prohibited on university property. All other drugs, including marijuana, controlled medication without a prescription and drug paraphernalia are prohibited for all campus residents. Residents are responsible for their guests. If a guest consumes alcohol and violates the law or causes harm to people or property on Whitworth’s campus, the resident is responsible. A violation of this policy may result in loss of campus housing and be reported to applicable postgraduate programs.

See the Whitworth Student Handbook for complete details of policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Check in is typically only available Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Requests for checking in outside those hours must be received at least 48 hours in advance. Contact housing at housing@whitworth.edu or 509.777.3250.
  • Early Arrivals/Late Departures: Requests for moving in before the program start date or requests for departing after the program end date must be submitted to housing at housing@whitworth.edu or 509.777.4444 at least 48 hours prior to arrival or departure. Not all requests may be granted; some rooms may not be available for occupancy earlier or later. Whitworth reserves the right to deny any request. Costs for early arrival or late departure are billed at $100 per night.
  • To keep housing costs low, the university requires students to clean their rooms before leaving. Cleaning supplies and vacuums will be supplied upon request. Failure to adequately clean one’s room will result in loss of the student’s refundable portion of their administrative/program operation fee ($75).

Fire Evacuation Procedures: Be prepared for emergency situations. Take time to locate the nearest emergency exit and an alternate exit if the primary exit is blocked. Planning ahead will reduce panic in an actual emergency situation. Due to the risk of fire, candles, incense, flammable liquids, hotplates and other cooking appliances with open heating elements are prohibited. If you discover a fire, sound the nearest fire alarm and leave the building through the nearest exit. Call the fire department by dialing 911.

Furniture: Rooms are furnished with a twin extra-long bed frame, twin extra-long mattress, desk, desk chair, dresser and wardrobe. Students are welcome to bring their own furniture; however, removal of non-university-owned furniture is ultimately the student's responsibility. Furniture may not be disposed of on campus. Failure to remove personal furniture or personal furniture disposed of on campus will be billed to the student at $100 per piece.

Guest policy: The right of a student to live in reasonable privacy takes precedence over the privilege of his or her pod/suitemates to entertain a guest. Having a guest is a privilege, not a right. Whitworth University reserves the right to immediately remove any guest from campus.

  1. Anyone visiting a student in their room is considered a "guest" of the student host who's being visited. As a "host," students are responsible for their guests' compliance with the community behavioral standards and all Whitworth policies outlined in the Student Handbook, whether or not the host is present in any situation where concern arises. This includes individual bedrooms, suites, apartments, houses and common areas within the residence halls. Additionally, students who have been found to frequent living areas will be presumed to be "guests" of the resident(s).
  2. Examples of guests can be any of the following, but not limited to: family members, students from other residence halls or living off campus, friends living off campus not associated with Whitworth University, "friends of friends" who accompany a guest into a residence hall, regardless of the relationship to the hosting student.
  3. Visitors to any residence hall must be escorted by a current resident of that hall while they are visiting, whether inside the room or in a common area. Visitors who are found to be without an escort may be required to leave the building and/or campus.
  4. Overnight guests are never permitted.
  5. Guests are not allowed to sleep in common areas (e.g., building lounges, Duvall pod living rooms).
  6. The host must inform the university of the guest's stay by completing the Guest Registration Form. Guests must be registered within 12 hours of the guest's arrival.
  7. Failure to abide by any of these policies may result in the guest being asked to leave campus, and additional sanctions for the host (including, but not limited to monetary fines) may be assessed.
  8. Parking information: Visitor parking permits can be obtained from the student life office or the HUB info desk. Other campus departments may also have permits on hand to issue regular visitors. Visitor spots are for visitors (not students, faculty or staff) who aren’t eligible for regular parking permits. There are several visitor spots spread throughout campus for easy access to various buildings. View the Whitworth parking map here.

Laundry: Each residence hall is equipped with pay-per-load washers and dryers. Machines use the PayRange app.

Mail: You cannot receive mail directly to your residence. Should you wish to receive mail during your stay, contact the Campus Post Office (weekdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.) in the HUB.

Parking Permits: Parking permits are required. Please contact Security Services (509.777.4444) about obtaining a temporary parking permit. And always please respect our neighbors and obey all traffic laws, and note that all Whitworth roads are considered fire roads – do not leave vehicles unattended alongside roadways.

Personal Trash: Personal trash is not to be left in common areas. A dumpster outside the building is provided. Personal trash must be removed from the pod/suite at the end of the student’s stay.

Technology (Internet, Printers, Wi-Fi, etc.): Whitworth University provides internet in all residence halls. You can connect to Whitworth’s student Wi-Fi network and print to the residence hall’s wireless printers (via the web print site at https://labprintsvr.whitworth.edu/myprintcenter) using your Whitworth username and password. If you have difficulty accessing the network (spotty coverage, slow coverage, router issues), printers, or you don’t have your username or password, please contact the help desk at helpdesk@whitworth.edu or 509.777.3911.
