Changing Young People's Lives

After graduation, I will be taking an AmeriCorps position at John Rogers High School in Spokane, doing case management work and providing other resources for students there.

At Whitworth, I learned through my sociology degree that change can happen at many different levels, and I have made it my life's goal to participate in that change wherever I can. I want to impact this community by showing young people that they are important and they have the ability to change this world. Hopefully, I will be able to do that throughout my life, regardless of whatever career I'm in.

Real-World Experience During Jan Term

What is something you are excited about right now?
I am incredibly excited for my Jan Term internship at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.! The last time I went to D.C. was when I was in eighth grade, and I fell in love with the city, with all its museums, monuments and history, so I can’t wait to be able to live there for an entire month. Unlike all my other Jan Term trips, this one will be especially unique, as I will commute to work, get access to all the different Smithsonian museums, and have the opportunity to connect with alumni in the area. It should be an unforgettable time!

Who at Whitworth are you most grateful for?
I am forever grateful to a lot of faculty and staff members here at Whitworth, but one person who definitely stands out to me is Stacy Keogh George in the sociology department. Without her, I wouldn’t have fallen in love with the subject of sociology, so in turn, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. She has taught and supported me in so much throughout my time here at Whitworth, and has helped me wrestle with the social injustices that we study in sociology with my faith as a Christian. She has also allowed me to partner with her on her research on "Ring by Spring," which has been really fun.

Community Minded

As the senior class coordinator, I am really excited to get to know the people in my graduating class. I’m also excited to just make the most of this year because it’s my last year here at Whitworth, and this place has impacted me in very real ways.

I think my biggest challenge will be balancing ASWU, school and my social life, while also remembering to have quality time with Christ. I’m also struggling with what exactly I want to do post-grad, so that has been a challenge as well.

I am really grateful of the community’s willingness to have courageous conversations, especially in regards to our individual differences. This year we started off the semester in remembrance of 9/11 through a Unity rally, and this gathering of students, faculty and staff reminded me how beautiful our community is as we stand in solidarity with one another.
