Washington State Paid Family and Medical Leave

Whitworth University is committed to supporting our employees through Washington state's Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program. This state-sponsored program provides partial wage replacement (usually 90 percent of weekly earnings) when employees need time off to care for family, bond with a new child, address personal health issues, or manage specific military-related events.

Through PFML, eligible employees can access financial support and secure peace of mind during life's important moments, all while keeping their employment with Whitworth University.

  • Program Overview

The Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave Program allows eligible employees to take paid time off for:

    • Bonding with a new child (birth, adoption or foster placement)
    • Caring for a family member with a serious health condition
    • Recovering from a serious personal health condition
    • Certain military-connected events or circumstances

Eligible employees may receive up to 12 weeks of paid leave per year, with certain cases allowing for up to 18 weeks of leave depending on combined family and medical needs.

For specific details about payment calculations, program requirements and extended leave options, visit the official Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave website.

  • Eligibility Information

To be eligible for Washington state's PFML:

    • Employees must have worked at least 820 hours (approximately 16 hours a week) in Washington state over the past year.
    • Both full-time and part-time employees are eligible for the program once they meet the hour requirement.

Eligibility does not depend on the duration of employment at Whitworth University alone but rather on hours worked within the state.

Note: PFML is funded through payroll deductions, with Whitworth University participating in the program as required by Washington state law.

  • Applying for Paid Family and Medical Leave

Employees ready to apply for leave can do so directly through the Washington State Employment Security Department. The application process includes submitting supporting documentation for the qualifying leave request.
