Financial Aid & Billing

The Offices of International Education and Student Financial Services work collaboratively on the process of billing and financial aid procedures for students participating in study abroad programs. The overall financial structure of study abroad varies by program type.

Fees for Study Abroad by Program Type

Faculty-Led Programs

Whitworth faculty-led program billing consists of two primary items: 1) Whitworth tuition or Jan Term fee and 2) program fee.

Students participating in April or May programs are billed the tuition associated with the number of credits earned on the program. Students participating in Jan Term programs are billed the current Jan Term fee ($385 for 2024-25 academic year).

The program fee is the all-inclusive fee package that comprises the majority of the program's expenses, including round-trip group airfare (if offered on the program), all housing, in-country transportation, academic/cultural excursions, some meals, etc. This program fee is broken down into six monthly payments, typically occurring on the 15th of the month from May to October.

Exchange or Partner Programs:

Whitworth exchange or partner program billing consists of the following billable items: 1) Whitworth tuition and fees and 2) Whitworth standard (double room) housing and meal plan (if applicable).

Students participating in a semester-long exchange or partner program (e.g., ISEP, AIFS) are billed the normal Whitworth semester tuition cost. Students do not pay tuition to the foreign university/program provider. All semester study abroad programs include housing, and therefore, students are billed for the standard Whitworth double room housing cost and do not pay the housing price of the foreign university/program provider. Likewise, if a formal meal plan is provided by the foreign university/program provider, students will be billed the equivalent Whitworth meal plan (typically Silver Plan). If no meal plan is provided on the program, students are not billed for any Whitworth meal plan and are responsible for their own meals budget abroad.

Financial Aid Eligibility

Whitworth is committed to ensuring that the study abroad experience is an equitable and accessible opportunity for our students. In nearly all cases, a student's full financial aid package (merit scholarships, need-based grants, federal grants, loans) are applicable to the Whitworth billable charges outlined above. Students should consult the student financial services office with any questions.

In addition, Whitworth offers grants and scholarships to students participating in all study abroad program types. These awards can vary in eligibility based on program type, financial need or program location.

Billing & Payment Procedures

All billable items are assessed to the individual's Whitworth student account and payable to Whitworth University through the existing university payment portal.

Students enrolled in a partner program (non-faculty-led) may be required to pay an application fee and/or deposit directly to the host university/program provider.
