Student Activities
Communication studies department students have diverse opportunities to explore their interests:
- The Whitworthian
The Whitworthian newspaper staff members have received regional and national awards for outstanding reporting, design, interactive web content, and photojournalism. - Whitworth Radio
Whitworth Radio students produce and host podcasts and radio shows with a wide range of topics and genres for the station's online stream. - Forensics
Students interested in public speaking and debating have helped the forensics team win regional and national tournaments. The Ethics Bowl team has also won the regional and national bowl competitions. - Public Relations Agency: Beyond the Pines
Whitworth's student-run public relations agency, Beyond the Pines, is designed to give students of all majors who are interested in public relations an opportunity to practice their skills in a real-world environment. Students work in client-based teams to provide a broad array of public relations services to area nonprofit organizations. - Service Learning
Students have the opportunity to apply what they are learning in the classroom through service-learning projects. Public relations students have created fundraising programs for Young Life and developed Bloomsday promotional programs to increase the number of volunteers at Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery. Organizational communication students meet with community service agencies and review grant applications as part of a campus philanthropy project.
