Behind the Voices
Behind the Voices
Our DJs aren’t used to cameras in the broadcast room. See one of the faces behind the voices! Little do most people know, the radio station doesn’t run itself. Not entirely at least. In the late 1980s, long before Whitworth FM had the technology to automate their services and broadcast 24/7 with the aid of computers, Whitworth FM, or KWRS as it was known back then, was entirely run by students. The voices heard live over the radio back then were the voices of student volunteers and radio staff hired specifically to manage the radio station. Some radio staff members even went on to get careers in the radio industry. KWRS Program Director in 1987, Tom Hancock, left KWRS to pursue his career at radio station KEZE after he had been promoted to "air-status" meaning that he would be a professional broadcasting DJ for another station! Never let it be said that Whitworth radio staff can’t compete with the pros!
