An Influential Experience
An Influential Experience
Despite all the trials and the harshness of the wilderness, students were able to evaluate their experiences and analyze their new and different outlook on life. In an article titled, “The Great Barrens Experience” in the October 1972 issue of Whitworth Today, Ed Murphy encapsulates students’ reflection of their summer journey: “I’ve gained a sense of tranquility and calm, a sense of peace of mind, or permanence, and of non-attachment. And I’ve discovered a respect for myself that wasn’t there before. Not an egotistic fantasy, but a deep and genuine respect for myself that makes it comfortable, even pleasurable, to be alive, and to be who or what I am. I’ve lost much of my cynicism and negativism, and gained in its place a newly felt joy at being alive and well.”
