Whitworth College: Study Abroad: Pacific Rim The first Hawaiian Jan term trip took place in 1971 and it served two purposes for the students in attendance. The trip will “provide an interesting as well as memorable Jan. term credit course” and it is also “considered as a study in another culture” (November 5, 1971 Whitworthian). Study abroad trips soon expanded to other Pacific Rim cultures and countries, including China. This picture shows a group of students visiting a Chinese factory in 1978.
