Whitworth Theatre in the 1990’s Part II: God’s Country
Whitworth Theatre in the 1990’s Part II: God’s Country
Partly in response to the Oklaholma City bombings, the Whitworth theatre department at the turn of the 21st century put on a production of God’s Country, about a boy growing up in a white supremacist compound in the inner Pacific Northwest run by notorious gang leader Robert Jay Matthews. The play attempted, in addition to mirroring national news, to spark debate about racism on Whitworth’s very campus. With the number of white students still mirroring around ninety percent and a majority still coming from racially homogenous states such as Idaho, Montana, and the eastern part of Washington, diversity at that point became crucial for Whitworth to uphold.
