College Integral Part of the City
The City of Spokane was greatly impacted by Expo ’74 as it underwent major construction projects and an influx of millions of people into its downtown area in a short amount of time. Whitworth was an important part of Spokane’s planning and successful execution of Expo ’74. The Nixon protest showed the connection and interest Whitworth students had not only in their local community, but their concern for the state of their country on a national level as well. Expo ’74 brought international attention to this small, Presbyterian, liberal arts college in Spokane and at the same time, the college proved itself an essential part of the Spokane community.
