The Arctic Barrens Expedition
The Arctic Barren Expedition was a summer term trip offered by Whitworth in the 1970s. According to an article in the April 21, 1972 issue of the Whitworthian newspaper, the “Ecology of the Arctic Barrens” class was a 50-day, 1100-mile canoe trip that explored the Northwest Territories of Canada just south of the Arctic Circle. Students studied a variety of subjects including plant and animal population, weather and geology, inland Eskimos, photography, and also the psychology of the team in making such a trip. The first trip was in June of 1972 and the program continued at Whitworth for five years. The 1972 trip included 24 members.
