Admission Requirements

The Master of Arts in Theology Program seeks students who are currently involved in a church and/or Christian organization, as well as those who desire a deeper knowledge and understanding of Christian theology. Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree with a 3.0 or higher GPA from an accredited institution. Prior graduate coursework may also be considered if an applicant's GPA is below 3.0. 

Your application is complete when we've received...

  • A completed application
  • Two professional recommendations: at least one from a member of a church or faith-based organization with which you're affiliated, mailed directly to Whitworth.
  • Official college/university transcripts, mailed directly to Whitworth
  • A personal essay of up to 600 words including a brief biography, a statement of your personal commitment to the Christian faith, and the reason for your interest in the program. (Submit online, through the mail or in person.)
  • A writing sample of up to 1,000 words (e.g. sermon, essay, book review, newsletter column) to help us assess your academic capability. (Submit online, through the mail or in person.)
  • A current résumé

Admission Criteria

The following criteria may be considered in the admission decision process: Undergraduate academic record, personal interview, quality of writing samples, professional recommendations, and involvement in churches and/or Christian organizations. Applicants will be notified by the master of arts in theology office of their admission status once all documents are received and reviewed by the admissions committee.

Steps to Apply

1. Personal Interview

  • Call 509.777.3222 and request an interview appointment time that is convenient for you. You will meet with Tim Dolan, director of the M.A. in Theology Program; plan on spending an hour, though it may take less time. 

2. Complete application requirements in one of three ways:

Option I - Apply online

  • Complete and submit the online application (includes space to write the personal essay and places to submit a résumé and writing sample). You will need a credit card to pay the $35 application fee.
  • You will receive an e-mail confirmation when application has been successfully submitted.
  • Once you receive confirmation, call 509.777.3222 to schedule a personal interview.

Option II - Print application forms

  • Print out the application forms to complete and bring in with you for your scheduled interview,  or you can mail the completed forms to: Whitworth Master of Arts in Theology, 300 W. Hawthorne Road, Spokane, WA 99251.
  • Call 509.777.3222 for an interview appointment.
  • A $35 application fee must be included with your application.

Option III - Apply in person

Pick up your application packet in the office when you come in for an interview, or call 509.777.3222 to request an application packet be mailed to you.

3.  Get transcripts
You will need to get official transcripts from the educational institution where you earned your bachelor's degree. For your convenience, print our Transcript Request Form (PDF) to send to the institution (there are two requests per page).

4.  Professional Recommendations
Two professional recommendations are required for admission.  At least one, and preferably both, need to be from a member of a church or faith-based organization with which you're currently affiliated (forms available to download or by contacting the master's in theology office). Recommendations must be mailed directly to the master's in theology office; address is on the recommendation form.
