Whitworth Symphony Orchestra

The Whitworth Symphony Orchestra and String Department, under the direction of Philip Baldwin, D.M.A, performs literature of the highest quality and features an annual student concerto competition and local and regional tours which have recently included San Francisco and Hawaii.

Membership is by audition:  Wind, brass and percussionists are selected by audition from the top members of the Whitworth Wind Symphony.  Strings auditions are open to all.

The orchestra has performed symphonies by Mahler, Sibelius, Haydn, Brahms, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky and Borodin, as well as shorter works by Prokofiev, Ibert, Bruckner, and Britten. The orchestra has hosted many faculty and guest soloists and has enjoyed the experience of performing live soundtracks to movie scenes in a multi-media concert with Hollywood composer Bruce Frazier. The orchestra was also selected to perform at the 2009 Northwest MENC conference.

The Whitworth Symphony Orchestra comprises outstanding musicians from throughout the Western U.S. Most orchestra members continue their private studies with our outstanding artist faculty members, all of whom are current or past members of the Spokane Symphony and are active as recitalists, soloists, and chamber musicians.

Students also benefit from opportunities that include performance labs, chamber music groups, guest master classes and frequent clinics with principal players of the Spokane Symphony, along with its conductors, Eckart Preu and Morihiko Nakahara.
