Adding an Endorsement to a Teaching Certificate
Washington state offers three routes for certified teachers to add an endorsement to their teaching certificates.
- Pathway 1: Adding Compatible Endorsements
- Pathway 2: Adding Similar Endorsements
The deadline to sign up to complete a Pedagogy Assessment with a Pathway 2 supervisor is the first business day of each month during the academic year. If payment and application materials are received by that date, the work can begin by the 15th of that same month. For example, if you would like to begin the Pathway 2 program in February, your application and payment must be received no later than February 3rd, 2014 and the work will begin no later than February 15th. The last month to sign up is April.
- Pathway 3: Adding Endorsements through a College/University Program
Access chart for the list of endorsement possibilities via Pathways 1 and 2, here.
Pathway 1 allows teachers to add compatible endorsements. Candidates must fulfill the following requirements:
- Hold a compatible endorsement on a valid Washington state certificate (Column 1 of OSPI chart) with 90 days of teaching experience in that subject area;
- Pass the content exam in the desired compatible endorsement;
- Apply through an educational service district or e-certification. Pathway 1 application & information.

Pathway 2 allows teachers to add an endorsement if they hold a similar endorsement in terms of instructional methodology, content skills and passing the appropriate content exam (www.west.nesinc.com and ACTFL for World Languages) (Column 2 of Pathway 1 and 2 Chart)
Pathway 3 allows a teacher to add an endorsement by completing an approved college/university program and passing the appropriate content exam (www.west.nesinc.com and ACTFL for World Languages).
