Career Services: Résumé Guidelines

  • HAVE SEVERAL PEOPLE READ YOUR RÉSUMÉ  AND GIVE FEEDBACK.  Ask at least one person to give it a 30-second review. After 30 seconds, what stood out, what impressed him/her/them?
  • For uniformity, print your résumé on the same paper, using the same font, as your cover letter. Use high-quality paper only.
  • If you're submitting your résumé electronically, convert the final version to a PDF. PDFs are more compatible than text documents with the district's system. If you don't have a PDF writer, you can easily download a free version by doing an online search for "PDF Writer Download." Don't forget to save both the text version and the PDF version of your résumé in more than one place.
  • You no longer have to keep your résumé to one page only. List pertinent experience for a well-rounded résumé.
  • Font and headings must be consistent throughout. Font size for your name and contact information at the top should be larger for emphasis.
  • Do NOT use abbreviations.
  • Instead of using a "Professional Objective" statement, consider using a list of your skills and experiences that make you a prime candidate for the position you are seeking.
  • Balance your sections and stay consistent with format style of dates, ages, grade level, etc.
  • Proofread, proofread, proofread! Be sure your endorsements and degrees are the same as on your certificate and transcript.  Use the correct name for any content assessment exam(s) you have passed.
  • Experience and education should be listed chronologically, with most recent first.

Our résumé examples are a guide. You can make adjustments where desired. Do not simply copy the examples, please. Individualize your résumé to make it unique to you. Content and readability are most important, so make your résumé stand out. Résumé Examples
