Chemists study the structure and interactions of chemical substances in the research and development of new products such as alternative fuels, vaccines, herbicides and pharmaceuticals. Most chemists work for private firms that are engaged in developing, testing and manufacturing products in industries ranging from food and beverages to photography and pharmaceuticals. Other sources of employment for chemists are colleges and universities and government agencies such as crime labs, public-health departments, environmental regulators, food and nutrition programs, and energy departments.
